Refrigerator Maintenance Tips

There's no doubt that the kitchen reigns supreme as the heart of a home, but the refrigerator might just be the unsung hero within that domain. It requires regular cleaning and maintenance to operate smoothly and efficiently.
Benefits of Maintaining Your Fridge
Proper refrigerator upkeep keeps kitchens clean while reducing electricity costs. Neglected fridges consume excessive energy and may fail to maintain proper temperatures, causing food spoilage. Preventative maintenance helps identify issues before they become serious problems.
Check the Door Seals
Door seals should be tight and free of food debris. Clean seals twice yearly using a toothbrush and baking soda mixed with water. The dollar-bill test verifies seal quality: close a dollar bill in the door so it's half in and half out. If it slips out easily, get the seals checked by a pro.
Keep Coils Clean
Condenser coils get rid of heat from the inside to the outside air. Dust-covered coils reduce efficiency. Clean coils twice annually by pulling the machine away from the wall, unplugging it, and vacuuming with a brush attachment.
Clean the Inside
Monthly cleaning of shelves, doors, and walls prevents germs and bacteria from contaminating food. Clean up spills immediately and remove expired items regularly.
Check Temperature
Maintain refrigerator temperature between 37–38 degrees Fahrenheit and freezer temperature at 0 degrees for optimal performance.
Keep It Filled
Refrigerators need thermal mass to maintain low temperatures. Filling empty space with water bottles helps maintain temperatures when doors are opened.
